Birds and rhinos sanctuary. Only about 3-hour drive from Kenya’s capital city Lake Nakuru National Park surrounds one of Great Rift Valley Soda Lake, Lake Nakuru. Its alkalinity and abundance of algae attracts thousands of pink flamingoes as well pelicans dotting the lake. 75% of the area was declared bird sanctuary site being home to over to over 450 bird species; kingfishers, grey crowned crane, Maasai ostrich, Cuckoos, Hoopoe, Swifts and raptors. The savannah and rift escarpment are home to endangered Rothschild giraffes, several black and white rhinos among other wildlife except Elephants. The three animals were brought here for protection from poachers. On a lucky day Pythons can be spotted. Black and white colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys and olive baboons enjoy the rich forest beauty. Hundreds of Zebras, warthogs, giraffes, gazelles, antelopes, wildebeest and buffalos make the cheetahs, lions, leopards, hyenas and jackals thrive in the eco-system. The park is a designated a RAMSAR SITE, declared UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered second best bird watching Park in Kenya.
